Key Goal: To meet the demand for both worker training and student education in an integrated and sustainable way
A sustainable nuclear energy programme requires a trained and competent workforce, and this includes a vibrant and sustainable skill base in radioecology, long-term training and education within the nuclear sciences. Within radioecology it is essential to focus on both the recruitment of future employees as well as securing the competence of the present workforce. Such needs are particularly acute in a field where formal training and education is fragmented, often inadequate, and where mobility is an essential means to support competence sharing.

Training and Education Objectives in STAR
- To strengthen and secure a sustainable integrated European training and education platform in radioecology that will attract top-level graduates.
- To maintain a relevant workforce that is in a position to meet future economic and societal needs within the nuclear sciences.
- To enhance the mobility of teachers and STAR scientists as a means to secure a goal of competence building.
The ultimate aim to recruit students to radioecology, ensure that the students and workers gain qualifications and competence that are attractive to employers, demonstrate that attractive career paths exists, and create networking opportunities for students already engaged in education or research in radioecology. STAR partners aimed to actively stimulate student interest in education and promote training and courses where user-friendly e-learning tools support the on-site experimental training. The STAR NoE represented a variety of expertise and facilities that was utilised in competence building and hence collaboration on training and education stimulated mobility at all levels. Joint student projects and supervision encouraged mutual access to facilities, infrastructure and observatory sites.
Tasks conducted to meet these objectives STAR:
- Consulted and engaged with stakeholders on the status and the training and education needs within radioecology and explored mechanisms to stimulate student interest in training and education
- Consolidated a sustainable, integrated, training and education platform in radioecology directed to research scientists, stakeholders and students
- Implemented and tested a selection of syllabus revised modules within radioecology, utilising the mobility of expert teachers and as well as of students and trainees
- Secured funding mechanisms for scientist and student mobility and the long-term sustainability of the training and education platform in radioecology.
